I could only laugh during that stretch when it seemed like tiktok might be banned and people mourned it as the last bastion of free speech. Oh really, u mean the ad-driven, government-owned app that silos you into a marketable (and profitable) algorithm. I’ve never encountered a less intelligent assertion in my life.

Hilariously, I just began scrolling Insta a few weeks ago…decidedly spending less time on FB because of the paid engagers, and I’m only there to be helpful, or learn things in the private groups I joined. I won’t be staying very long but it has been entertaining. And I haven’t bought a thing. I buy many more things on YouTube when I trust the person telling me how it works, or fits, or how durable something is! Anyway, Kackie…you are spot on and I’ll always decide to make room in my brain for your insightful essays! ❤️

Same! Every time I open facebook, it's all paid bull corn. I never see anything from actual people I know and would like to see. Instagram better at the moment. At least the ads feel more targeted and it's not muting the stuff I want to see.

Oof this hits. I quit most social media slowly but surely over a few years. I still hit up YT for you and a few others, almost all long-form content. I don’t watch the news but do subscribe to 3 email newsletters that still do ads but at least label them as such (shout out to the Tangle for being the voice of reason in political news.) It has been so good for my mental health. Now I can focus on the local organizations doing good things I can volunteer my time with. I’m still probably looking at too much new makeup (thanks subscriber chat 🤣), but I can contextualize things into what I really do want to prioritize and what I don’t.

Influencer culture is there because it’s profitable, if we make it unprofitable it loses power over all of us.

Thoughts from an ADD brain (I don't have the hyperactivity, just the lack of focus):

1. You don't need to cold turkey quit social media, though I realize that might be the only way for some people. It's so simple to ease into the removal of it's importance from your life if you just start actively curating a bit. Start liking art, nature, and cute animal videos instead of outrage. Stop watching politically slanted stuff or influencer videos where they're obviously just trying to sell you something. Actively skip ads as soon as you see them. Set time limits. Have awareness of what you're doing with your time, and what you could be doing instead.

2. I miss Livejournal, IRC, and even Myspace some days.

3. Tangentially related: You should check out House Of El if you don't already watch her. I think you'd really like her.

My TV, internet, and phone were in German. They were just tools, not entertainment. I never fully integrated, and I'm not mad about it.
